Cannon Hill Stars players from 12yrs of age and adult volunteers are welcome to express an interest to Coach. The role of the Coach Coaches play an important role in players exploring and discovering a love of physical activity and sport. Coaches do this by providing lots of fun and enjoyment as players are learning new skills, keep them active and engaged by giving lots of opportunities to practice and touch the ball, and opportunities to play the game. 3 main reasons people play sport: to have fun; to play with friends; to learn new skills Education At Stars, we believe there is no such thing as too much education, and therefore we are committed to funding the ongoing education of Coaches by providing a range of resources and education opportunities for both new and experienced Coaches including in house Coach Education sessions, digital video subscriptions , access to Netball Queensland specialist clinics and subsidised Netball Learning Centre courses, and guided pathways to Development Coaching through MDNA representative netball. Characteristics of a good coach include: An understanding of the basic skills and strategies of netball; An understanding of the rules of the game; Planning training sessions which are fun, encourage learning, provide challenges and incorporate the skills of the game; Flexibility to change when required; Providing positive feedback to players, including what they are doing well and ways they can improve; Developing great relationships with players, parents and carers, and other Coaches. Cannon Hill Stars players are welcome to express an interest to umpire from 12yrs of age, however due to numbers may not begin Saturday competition until 13yrs of age. Umpiring Support Structure Nationally accredited umpires will oversee all umpire development. Whilst a separate umpire convener will coordinate the umpire rostering and opportunities. Mentoring and development advice will be regularly communicated with you via Stars Umpire Mentors or the convener. At MDNA, collaboration occurs across all clubs and at times other club's mentors, may provide supervision, mentoring advice and feedback. All mentor advice and feedback should be welcomed, as it is preparing you to umpire more challenging games and attain the MDNA Silver and Gold awards. If advice sounds contradictory or confusing, please clarify with Stars mentors as soon as you can. The newer umpires will nearly always have a mentor present. All rostering, communication, MDNA liaison and administration duties will occur via the convener. Collaboration with other Club's conveners occurs to ensure an appropriate roster is scheduled. A prompt reply to availability requests for rostering is appreciated. An attempt will be made to circulate the proposed roster for the forthcoming Saturday by Thursday morning. This will give you an opportunity to review the roster and make adjustments no later than Thursday night at training. In order to have the roster ready for Thursday morning, Saturday availability will be required no later than Tuesday 7pm. If there has been no communication from you regarding availability prior to Tuesday 7pm, it will be assumed you are unavailable that weekend and therefore won’t be rostered to umpire. Umpire Expectations Umpiring requires a certain level of maturity and responsibility; and for many, this is your first job. As this is a job, you will get paid whilst you represent the Club. Like all jobs, certain expectations exist: - Your conduct and appearance needs to be in line with Club and Umpiring expectations - If you cannot do a rostered game, you must communicate this as soon a you learn you are no longer available - not the day before, or the day of your scheduled roster - You are expected to attend Umpire training sessions, workshops and courses that are offered to you I want to umpire, what now? 1. Study the Rulebook This can be found online at: Umpire Resources - Netball Queensland . A ‘Rules of Netball’ app is also available. You are encouraged to download it onto your phone. 2. Theory Exam The theory exam is an online, open book exam with a pass mark of 70%. Umpires are required to pass this exam prior to umpiring on a Saturday. The exam can be found at Australian Sport Learning Centre. Log in to the site (netball.com.au). The exam costs $12 to undertake and the club will reimburse upon evidence of the receipt. 3. Registration If you are not a registered player this year, you still need to be a member of Netball Queensland via the club. The non-playing membership is $47. This membership is not required if playing in a Netball Queensland competition. If you are a registered player, please also register as an umpire via the netball connect app ($5). 4. Training Workshops will be provided at different times throughout the training season. Expectations to attend at least one workshop exists. Obviously the more workshops that are attended, may potentially lead to faster consolidation of skills. 5. Communication The completed Theory of Netball Exam certificate, as well as contact details is required by the convener. If you know you are unlikely to- or forget to- read your emails and texts, please provide an additional contact. Regular communication will occur via email and sometimes text. If you are not happy for me to share your contact details to your fellow umpires, please alert me to this. Once you are ready to umpire fixture games, please provide your bank details to the umpire convenor.

- Patsy Ryan | Welcome to the STARS
OUR STAR Patsy Ryan Current/previous roles: Coaches Assistant Duration with Club: I joined the club as a player in 1965 and continued to play and coach until 1978. I returned in the 2000s as a Coach, Umpire and Umpire Convenor. What did you want to be when you grew up: Most probably a teacher or a worker at the Cannon Hill Sale Yards with my father. The yards closed in the 1990s. If you had to change your name, what would it be and why: I like the name Ruby, too late for me to change mine so I called my dog Ruby. What is the craziest thing you’ve seen another Star do: It was while I was still playing for Stars and we had changed the uniform to a skirt and polo top. The skirt was fastened at the waist with a metal clip. A short time into the game our GD, a rather big lady, had a mishap with the clip and her skirt fell down. Well she screamed and laughed and we all laughed as she continued to play with one hand holding up her skirt and calling for the ball with the other. What quote or phrase that people say do you hate: Its not something that other people say but something I often say, "fair dinkum". I try to stop my self but "fair dinkum" its hard. Who do you love to beat: I love to beat the NSW Blues in the State of Origin, and that's fair dinkum! If you could play any sport professionally, what would it be : That would be golf for sure, after netball of course. What’s your very minor superpower: I can watch television with my eyes closed. Some people may call that sleeping , what ever!! What was the dumbest way you’ve been injured: I jumped from the top of a high fence once, thinking I would land like a butterfly. Instead I fell like a bag of cement, and landed on my head and broke my wrist. Wont be trying that again soon.
